WHAT DO WE DO?
The following is a list of our programmes. Please contact david.mcgovern@familibase.ie with enquiries.
CHERRY ORCHARD RUNNING CLUB
Community Development Initiative Cherry Orchard Running Club is unofficially in operation since 2013 when a group of local men started running as a way to support their rehabilitation. In 2016 FamiliBase were reviewing their programme and looking for ways to reach local young people not engaging in services. Running was proposed as an outreach activity to attempt to engage these young people in a health and social initiative. FamiliBase engaged with the local residents involved in running marathons and races and asked them for their support in coaching the young people for running activities. In February 2017, the junior section of Cherry Orchard Running Club was established. The Club was officially registered with the AAI in April 2017, since then it has grown from strength to strength. The club has a committee of local people currently being supported by FamiliBase. The club currently have running groups for all ages and abilities from Couch to 5k “Beginner “Programmes right up to marathon distance.
HORSEPOWER
Community Development Initiative Horsepower is a community response to the issue of horse ownership in the Cherry Orchard area. The Horsepower committee are a group of predominantly young men being supported by FamiliBase. The committee are members of the Cherry Orchard community. Their aim is to provide a response to illegally owned equines in the area and also provide an opportunity for previously disengaged young people to participate in training and employment. Ultimately Horsepower want to develop a site in the Cherry Orchard/ Park west area for an equine facility that will rent stables at an affordable rate to local horse owners and to increase horse welfare in the community and beyond.
JUNIOR PARK RUN
Familibase along with local volunteers sought for funding to bring a Junior Parkrun to Cherry Orchard. Junior Parkrun is a weekly timed 2k event which takes place at 9:30am on Sunday mornings for children and young people aged 4-14. After a lot of hard work from the local community, junior Parkrun committee and volunteers we had our first junior Parkrun event in March 2020 with 65 young people attending along with large support from family and friends. Familibase will continue to work with the committee and volunteers to provide the necessary training and support to put the structures in place for this initiative to run sustainably on a weekly basis.
Saturday Wellness
Saturday Wellness is a series of healthy wellbeing activities that take place in Familibase on Saturday mornings. Sessions are facilitated in activities such as Yoga, Mindfulness and Reiki. Post session: participants can enjoy a cooked breakfast along with a relaxing social space to engage with other community members.
Lads to Dads
Lads to Dads are a group of fathers from the local community. They have come together to form a group and to create a space where they can offer peer support along with engaging in a positive social space filled with exciting activities. The group are at a really exciting stage and are enjoying both the planning and taken part in activities.
Other Community Programmes
Familibase works with other members of the community, groups and other services through one off and seasonal events such as International Women’s Day and festivals such as Halloween. This year for International Women’s Day we worked with local women in the community to create a wonderful video which highlighted “Women in Leadership” within the community. Familibase are always looking to support local people and groups and help in any way in the progression and development of these. Please get in touch for more details.
